Most people feel like they’re behind. But the people that don’t, aren’t smarter. They’re just better informed.

Forward Future is a daily news briefing for people who want clarity, not hype. In one concise newsletter each day, you’ll get the most important AI and tech developments, learn why they matter, and what they signal about what’s coming next.

We cover real product launches, model updates, policy shifts, and industry moves shaping how AI actually gets built, adopted, and regulated. Written for operators, builders, leaders, and anyone who wants to sound sharp when AI comes up in the meeting.

It takes about five minutes to read, but the edge lasts all day.

Service. That’s leadership - period. Leadership doesn’t come with an addendum, profit-sharing clause, or expected ROI (return on investment). Our world is full of the antithesis of this ethos. But, on my mother’s 90th birthday this week, and this, Holy Week, I am reminded of the true nature of leadership.

It simply serves FOR others.

Intro

The Return You Should Never Expect

We live in a results-driven world.

Return on investment.
Performance incentives.
Metrics.
Wins.
Recognition.

Everything is measured by what we get back.

But true leadership was never meant to be transactional.

True leadership is transformational.

And transformation rarely begins with what I get.

It begins with:

What do they need?

Because the paradox of leadership is this:

The best leaders stop keeping score.

Not because impact doesn’t matter.

But because impact was never supposed to be about them.

“Leadership should be born out of the understanding of the needs of those who would be affected by it.” Marian Anderson

Research consistently shows that servant leadership — leadership focused on developing others rather than personal gain — leads to stronger engagement, trust, and performance outcomes in teams and organizations.

John 13:1-17

Develop

Every leader must eventually answer this question honestly:

If nobody noticed… would I still lead this way?

Would you still:
• Prepare the same way?
• Speak with the same care?
• Hold the same standards?
• Invest the same energy?
• Show the same patience?

Or do we sometimes lead hoping for appreciation?

This is where leadership gets purified.

Because selfless leadership requires emotional maturity.

It requires you to become the kind of person who can:

Give credit away
Carry responsibility
Invest without applause
Correct without ego
Serve without spotlight

This is why servant leadership is so rare.

It requires something most leadership books don't talk about:

Security.

Insecure leaders need return.

Secure leaders create return.

And the difference is enormous.

“The true heroes of the new millennium will be servant leaders, quietly working out of the spotlight to transform our world.” Ann McGee-Cooper

Large team studies found servant leadership had a significant positive impact on team innovation and performance, especially when leaders emphasized social responsibility and guidance.

Philippians 2:5-8

Relationships

Selfless leadership shows up most clearly in relationships.

Not in speeches.

Not in slogans.

Not in mission statements.

But in moments like:

Staying late to listen
Having the hard conversation
Believing in someone before they believe in themselves
Correcting because you care
Holding the standard because they matter

Real leadership often looks like emotional labor no one sees.

The phone call nobody knows about.

The encouragement nobody hears.

The patience nobody applauds.

The forgiveness nobody understands.

This is why leadership is sacred work.

Because you're shaping hearts, not just outcomes.

And hearts cannot be led through transactions.

Only through sincerity.

“Organizations exist to serve. Period. Leaders live to serve. Period.” Tom Peters

Sports leadership research consistently shows leadership style significantly impacts:

Team cohesion
Motivation
Team culture
Performance outcomes

And broader sport research confirms leadership is a fundamental factor influencing team effectiveness and mental well-being.

Romans 5:8

Just For You Coach

Here is the hard reflection question:

Do I need something from the people I lead?

Approval?
Control?
Validation?
Success to prove something?

Or…

Am I truly free enough to lead them for their growth?

Because players can feel the difference.

Employees can feel the difference.

Children can feel the difference.

And here is the truth most leaders must eventually face:

If you need something emotionally from those you lead…

You will eventually lead to get it.

But when you are grounded in purpose, identity, and conviction:

You can lead freely.

And free leaders create free teams.

So maybe the real leadership question isn't:

What return am I getting?

Maybe it's:

Am I giving them what they need even if I get nothing back?

That is where legacy begins. When you lead from this heart posture, that is where you’ll find peace.

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Mahatma Gandhi

Research keeps confirming what the best leaders already know:
When leaders stop chasing personal return and start investing in people, performance follows.

John 15:13

Why This Matters

Most people remember very few wins.

Most people remember very few scores.

Most people remember very few statistics.

But almost everyone remembers:

Who believed in them.
Who stood by them.
Who challenged them.
Who saw them.
Who cared.

The return on leadership rarely shows up on a scoreboard.

It shows up years later when:

A former player becomes a great parent.

A former employee becomes a principled leader.

A former student chooses integrity.

That is the real return.

And often…

You may never see it.

That is why leadership must be rooted in something deeper than outcome.

It must be rooted in purpose.

Because when leadership is rooted in purpose instead of return:

You stop asking:

What did I get?

And you start asking:

Who did they become?

A Final Thought

The greatest leaders understand something quiet but powerful:

Farmers do not eat every seed they plant.

Some things are planted for a future they may never see.

That is leadership.

You plant:

Standards
Belief
Discipline
Character
Confidence
Integrity

Not for applause.

Not for return.

But because it is right.

Because it matters.

Because people matter.

Because our work is sacred.

And maybe the most beautiful truth about leadership is this:

When you stop chasing return…
you often create the greatest return possible.

Just not for yourself.

For them.

And in the end…

That was always the point.

Two pictures of this ethos were solidified for me this week. #1 - Jesus and #2 - My momma. His last act of service was giving his life. He didn’t have to, and we don’t deserve it. And, aligned with that is the way in which my momma has lived her life. She turned 90 this week. She was born into a sharecropper family during the Great Depression. The oldest daughter, which meant she was a caregiver and surrogate mom, as well as a farmhand. Through my entire life, she has served her family, selflessly. She never asks for anything in return. She just simply “does.” Love and leadership share this kindred spirit. No expectation of gain. No image to keep up. Just service for the sake of others. It takes a special heart to do this. I pray mine can truly reach this pinnacle before I reach 90…if I’m so blessed. Thank you Jesus for loving us enough to give all. Thank you again for giving me my momma who gives all of herself. Thank you momma for teaching me this lesson everyday of my life, even when you didn’t have to. I don’t deserve it. Happy Easter. HE IS RISEN.

Mark 16:1-8

Coach Castillo’s Challenge of The Week: FIRST, come to terms with 3 truths of leadership: 1) You will make difficult decisions that negatively affect people you care about.
2) You will be disliked despite your best efforts to do the best for the most.
3) You will be misunderstood and will not always have the opportunity to defend yourself. But, also remember this: The truth doesn’t have to be liked, appreciated, or understood AND neither does leadership. Go lead FOR others, not applause, likes, or acknowledgement. That’s what true leadership does = SERVE.
