  • WHY this matters

I recently spoke to a group of investors about resilience. And I used one of my favorite movies as the example, The Karate Kid. The lesson was simple. Daniel got his butt handed to him when he reacted. But, when he RESPONDED, he truly demonstrated resilience and growth. And it started with 4 simple words of instruction. No, not wax on, wax off — “Come tomorrow, start early.” Miyagi simply asked him to be present. Between Daniel’s start and finishing crane kick, he just practiced showing up. Day in, day out, painting one board at a time, sanding one plank at a time. The middle is where the magic was, not in the trophy at the end. And so it is with life. Everyday is full of wonderful opportunities to simply show up. So, “come tomorrow — start early.”

- Coach Castillo

In between start and finish, that is where the magic is found.

Intro

It starts with excitement.

A new season.
A new job.
A new culture you’re trying to build.
A new standard you're trying to establish.

Energy is high. Vision is clear. Belief is strong.

Then comes the part nobody talks about.

The middle.

The quiet days.
The repetitive days.
The days where progress feels invisible.

The days where all you can do is show up again.

And again.

And again.

Because leadership isn’t built in highlight moments.

It’s built in the thousands of unseen decisions between the start and the finish.

And just like that…

Years pass.

Athletes graduate.
Employees move on.
Children grow up.

And what remains is the evidence of what happened in the middle.

"Be not afraid of going slowly, be afraid only of standing still."

Philippians 1:6

Develop

The greatest separator in leadership is not knowledge.

It is consistency.

Anyone can be motivated at the start.

Few remain disciplined in the middle.

What development really looks like:

Show up when you're tired.

Teach when you're frustrated.

Correct when it's uncomfortable.

Encourage when progress is slow.

Stay steady when emotions fluctuate.

Development is choosing process over emotion.

Every single day.

Because leaders who change outcomes understand:

Consistency compounds.

And compound growth always looks slow… until suddenly it isn’t.

Job 17:9

Relationships

At some point, every leader faces the same moment.

The moment where you step away.

The season ends.

The athlete graduates.

The employee moves on.

Your children no longer need daily guidance.

And in that moment you realize something powerful:

Leadership was never about control.

It was always about preparation.

We don’t measure leadership by how long people stay.

We measure leadership by who they become after they leave.

Do they carry discipline?

Do they carry confidence?

Do they carry resilience?

Do they carry belief?

Do they carry the standard?

Because the true finish line of leadership is this:

Who they become when you are no longer there.

"A little progress every day adds up to big results." — Satya Nani

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Just For You Coach

Anyone can start something.

Few stay long enough to see transformation.

The leaders who change lives understand:

The middle is the mission.

The unseen work IS the work.

The daily investment IS the legacy.

Because when it's all said and done…

People rarely remember your speeches.

They remember your consistency.

They remember how safe they felt.

They remember how you believed in them.

They remember the standard you refused to lower.

And most importantly…

They remember how you showed up.

"For any movement to gain momentum, one must start with a small action." — Adam Braun

Matthew 24:13

Why This Matters

The work between the start and finish is rarely glamorous.

It is repetitive.
It is slow.
It is often thankless.

But it is sacred work.

Because one day…

Just like that…

You'll realize the finish was never the point.

Who they became along the way was.

And that is how we know:

We didn't just lead.

We helped them Play Beautiful.

My daughter’s high school powerlifting career ended this weekend. And with it, something special we shared together. I’ve trained my twins since they were 11. One of them chose to embrace powerlifting. I entered her in her first competition when she turned 16. Before then, her PR’s were ours to share in the seclusion of the garage gym. Humble, simple, grinding. And then she stepped on the platform. She bravely entered the state championship meet as the lone girl from her school, a team of literally 1. In 3 years she now holds 6 state records across 2 weight classes, 3 individual state titles, 2 team state titles, and 4 outstanding lifter awards. The beginning was quiet. The end, equally humble. But the middle….oh the middle was a wonderful ride. She found out so much about herself, and let me tag along the journey. I’ll desperately miss the hugs and high fives. I’ll miss seeing her build others up, even her opponents. But I so look forward to what she’ll do next, because she learned to show up everyday, grab the bar, and get to work. Congratulations young lady on a career of character, built on the back of filthy, determined, dogged work ethic. Now to your next “lift.” The bar is loaded my darling.

Coach Castillo’s Challenge of The Week: I looked at my daughter yesterday and said, “One last ride for the Castillo’s.” Her eyes filled with tears. I said, “No, not yet. Tomorrow we will be sad together. Today, today every rep is pure joy. Let’s just live in joy today.” Today, seek joy in the hard work of leadership and growth. The invisible movement of the needle of progress. Stack these types of days one by one. And when the end does come, you can stand on the “cathedral,” you’ve helped others build.
